$30,000 Bowness Pictures Prize finalists declared

A whole of 52 finalists have just been declared for the 16th once-a-year William and Winifred Bowness Pictures Prize. Picked from over 1,700 illustrations or photos from Australian artists, the Prize delivers the winning function an award of $30,000 as perfectly as inclusion into the Monash Gallery of Art’s nationally important selection of Australian images. The Smith & Singer People’s Option Award will be voted by the public with the receiver acquiring $5,000. The once-a-year survey of contemporary photographic observe in Australia is considered a person of the most prestigious prizes in the place.

Judged by acclaimed artist Del Kathryn Barton, MGA Director Anouska Phizacklea, and Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Australia, Karen Quinlan AM, they observed rising themes of isolation, protest, and the effect of COVID restrictions in the images which exposed underlying troubles encounter by several. But they also noted that times of hope and celebration, such as exemplary examples of personal portraiture, conventional landscapes with a modern day spin, and some outright quirky illustrations or photos were being also evident.

“The Bowness Photography Prize every 12 months gives a exclusive insight into what is present in society, and the shortlisted is effective discuss to the range of practical experience with the artists responding powerfully to the impression COVID has had on society,” Anouska Phizacklea stated.

The winner will be declared on 16 September, while the exhibition operates from 9 September – 7 November.
